You should inform the police as soon as a burglary or theft has occurred and keep the details of the police station and the officer you spoke to.
You will be given a crime reference number that you will need to pass on to the insurers as proof of the incident |
If credit cards or cheque books are stolen, inform your bank and/or credit card company immediately. If you are a tenant your landlord will need to be informed and they will arrange for any necessary repairs. If you own your own home you will have to arrange this yourself through your building insurance policy.
Make sure you know where your insurance documents are kept. They should be in a safe place that is preferably fire proof such as filing cabinet. Once you have read the details of your cover you should call the number on your policy.
This should be as soon as you discover the burglary or damage. Go to the appropriate section in your policy booklet and check whether the circumstances of the loss are covered and any limits that might be applicable. Check the excess amount. This is the amount you will have to pay in the event of a claim.
Certain types of claims may require the assistance of an independent Loss Adjuster to visit you and sometimes the insurers will appoint a repairer or supplier who are selected for their expertise, this is to ensure your claim is dealt with quickly.
