Recent research shows that older people are the main targets for Distraction Burglary. The bogus caller will normally claim to be working for a charity or as police officers as well as representatives of utility companies, bare in mind that ‘The water Board' no longer exists! They are very persuasive and appear completely credible.
Bogus callers are often working with other people and will do everything they can to get into people's homes. Once inside they will distract the homeowner and steal money and other possessions. It is also distressing to know that children will often take up distraction burglary and pretend to have kicked their ball over your wall or to have lost their pet in your garden.
There are some stock sayings they will use to gain your confidence and so allow them in. These include:
- I'm here to check the pipes
- Can I have a glass of Water?
- Can I check your water I think it may be leaking
- I need to check for damp
- I'm from Age Concern – can I take a look at your pension book
- Can I use your loo?
- Can I borrow your phone – there's been an accident
- You've won a prize – can I discuss it with you
To stop becoming a victim of a bogus caller;
- Do not open the door fully – keep the chain on
- Think whether you are expecting anyone - don't feel obliged to let anyone in. Politely say you are busy and call the police if you are suspicious
- Ask for identification – if you are unsure about them call the organisation they say they represent.
